Justina Yu’s debut at the ninth WTF World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Aguascalientes, Mexico turned out to be a success yesterday.

Competing in the newly created cadet (12 to 14 year old) poomsae category, the 14-year-old Markham resident claimed a silver medal in the female individual category.

Su-yeong Choi of South Korea won the gold medal, edging Yu by .01 of a point.

A Grade 9 student at St. Brother Andre Catholic High School and a third-degree black belt, Yu will have an opportunity in earning a second medal as she will be competing in the team poomsae competition Sunday.

A total of 461 poomsae athletes from 46 countries are competing for top honors in 36 categories, including eight for freestyle poomsae.
